What to Expect During the Dental Implant Process

Dental Implant Process Dentist Grand Rapids Mi

Our Grand Rapids, MI, dental implant dentist, would be more than happy to walk you through the steps of the dental implant procedure if you’re interested. He’ll also help you better understand your tooth replacement options so you can make an informed decision for your smile.

In the meantime, here’s what you need to know about the process of getting dental implants.

The Initial Dental Implant Consultation

Before we can get into the procedure, you’ll need to schedule a consultation with our local dental implant dentist. During your appointment, Dr. Nichols will explain the pros and cons of single-tooth dental implants or implant-supported dentures, depending on what you’re needing. We’ll also go over your eligibility and will assess the current condition of your smile. With this transparent information, you can feel confident about any future treatment plans.

You may be a frontrunner for dental implants if you:

  • Have one or more missing teeth
  • Want a stable, long-term form of tooth replacement
  • Are in generally good health
  • Have healthy gums
  • Don’t have untreated gum disease
  • Have a jawbone that’s strong enough to hold an implant (or you’re open to bone grafting if needed)
  • Aren’t a heavy smoker or you’re willing to quit before and after surgery

Please keep in mind that we also offer other ways to replace missing teethif dental implant placementis not the best path forward. These options include dentures and dental bridges. We are more than happy to discuss all forms of treatment and answer any questions you may have.

Dental Implant Surgery

During dental implant surgery, Dr. Nichols will make a small incision along the gum line and insert the titanium rod into your jawbone. You should also feel no pain whatsoever during the actual single-tooth replacement procedure. We will administer a local anesthetic to the area so other than some pressure, you should be quite comfortable. If you notice any severe discomfort while the dental implant is being placed, please don’t hesitate to speak up and we’ll make sure the area is properly numb before continuing.

Before you leave, you’ll receive specific aftercare instructions to follow so you can set yourself up for success while you heal. Examples of how you can minimize post-procedural symptoms include:

  • Ice Packs: Apply ice packs to the cheek area adjacent to the surgical site to reduce swelling. Do this for 15 minutes on, followed by 15 minutes off, during the first day after surgery.
  • Rest: Keep physical activity to a minimum. Elevated heart rates can increase bleeding and swelling. Plan to rest for at least the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • Soft Foods: Stick to a diet of soft foods like yogurt, soup, and applesauce for the first few days. It’s best to also temporarily avoid foods or drinks that are overly chewy, sticky, hot, spicy, hard, or acidic as these can irritate the implant site.

The Osseointegration Phase

Before we can place the abutment (connector piece) and porcelain dental crown, the implant will need to fuse to your jawbone over the course of several months. This healing process is called osseointegration and it’s vital to the success of dental implants. Without proper osseointegration, the implant will fail and will not be able to support any additional components.

During this time, you will be monitored during periodic visits to our Grand Rapids, MI, dental office to ensure the implant is fusing to the jawbone as expected. Once healing is complete, you’ll be ready for the next stage of the dental implant process.

Dental Crown Placement

For the final step, Dr. Nichols will place the abutment and crown over top of the dental implant. While the dental crown gives you the appearance of a natural tooth, the abutment acts as a connector piece between the implant and crown. Together, the implant, abutment, and crown give you the full function and appearance of a natural tooth.

Dental implants allow you to smile, eat, talk, and laugh with confidence and without the worry of slipping dentures. Since dental implants are embedded in the jawbone, you’ll never have to worry about them slipping during an inopportune moment. Instead, your dental implants will look and feel like natural teeth.
