Your gums are not always your primary concern when planning your dental visit. This is a serious oversight as your gums provide the foundation for a healthy smile. Left untreated, gum disease can ultimately lead to gum recession and bone loss and result in tooth loss. If treatment is needed, don't worry just call us at Nichols Family Dentistry. We offer periodontic treatments to suit your situation.
Scaling and root planing
Anyone who has had a dental cleaning has experienced scaling as it is the method used to scrape tartar and plaque from teeth. When gum disease is present, this needs to occur at a deeper level, going below the gum line to remove plaque, tartar and diseased tissue. Root planing is when this same process is applied at root level.
Extraction may be necessary if damage has progressed to an level that can’t be corrected.
There are thin tissues in the mouth that extend between the gums and other areas within the mouth. If these thin tissues, called frenula, are creating gaps by pulling on your gums, the decision may be made to remove them via a quick and easy procedure called a frenectomy.
Don’t ignore your gums as you strive for oral health. Our friendly hygienists will work with you to develop an at home care plan that may help avoid gum disease. If treatment is needed, don’t worry Nichols Family Dentistry is equipped to provide you with the care you need.
